Fiat 500e high voltage battery regeneration

batteryFiat 500e high voltage battery regeneration – after unprofessional rise of overdischarge in another service.
The history of this repair began with a typical problem: Fiat 500e does not load and does not start after a long time of not using the car. From the initial interview, I learned that the car could stand in this condition for several months. Therefore, we immediately started disassembling the HV battery…

An additional problem that came to light after dismantling the battery, was broken warranty seals. So the battery has already been repaired before and as I checked, not by me. At this point, I began to anticipate the potential source of the problem. Everything was confirmed several minutes later, after removing the top cover of the Fiat 500e’s battery pack. Photos of voltage measurements on 4 front, six-cell battery modules speak for themselves.

Initial measurements showed that most of the batteries hold current quite well, a few cells were below the lower threshold of the on-board charger, which is below 2.7V per cell, but not less than 2.0V. On the other hand, the entire six-cell module, on the very front of the battery, with marked cathodes (+) and anodes (-) of the cells. In addition, with the same marker, a great number one. I checked the serial numbers of the battery modules and ruled out that the module was replaced with another battery.

This is the best proof that an overly discharged Lithium-Ion battery is not enough to simply “charge”. Connecting such cells to a 6-cell RC-modeler charger or home “laboratory” bench power supplies gives an excellent chance for a permanent and clear deterioration of the health of Lithium batteries until they are completely damaged.

Unprofessional attempts to excite or regenerate the Fiat 500e high-voltage battery in most cases end in damage to the insulators between the cathode and the anode of the cell. Such a cell will lose a dozen or so mV of voltage every day, and thus, causing progressive unbalance of the HV battery.

In this case, the state of the module with number one gives no chance to save it and we have to replace it with another recovery module. At this point, it is impossible not to mention that it is not enough to take the first module from the edge, “as long as the plus is on the same side”. The replaced module must be matched in terms of age and battery capacity, and thus: “raid”.
Thanks to this, we are sure that the installed modules will not stand out from the rest of the high-voltage battery of the Fiat 500e, causing its constant balancing, i.e. heating and wasting energy.

Fiat 500e high voltage battery regeneration. Is this the end of the job?

I am convinced that most websites end their work at this point. The car has already started, it means “you can cancel the payment and everything else is invalid.” Meanwhile, at FiatService.EU, after the first full cycle of the battery, it’s only time to perform real tests of the battery at full load and in the full operating range. Thanks to this, even if the customer does not accept the cost of further repair, aimed at improving the performance and range of the car. I am the one who is sure that the high voltage battery of your Fiat 500e is safe and will not be a “ticking surprise” or simply a BOMB.

Fiat 500e battery regeneration is a service that you should not entrust to anyone other than FiatService.EU.

Another Fiat 500e after another service

Another Fiat 500e after another service. I.e. repair of a car, broken by another service. The car came to me after a remote diagnosis of the loss of insulators. I was expecting some possible problems and solutions. But the actual problem that arose was absolutely not expected. Even though I have had similar cases before, this one brought me some additional puzzles. But at the end it turned out that the service that repaired the batteries before me, was the most fault of this car.

    Service Electric Vehicle System

Service Electric Vehicle System – car in yellow triangle on the dashboard & not ready Fiat 500e. This is another example why not disregarding this warning and do not disconnect the 12V battery to reset faults. Because the earlier the problem is diagnosed, the smaller the damage to the battery and the repair is much easier. the longer the battery is exposed to water and coolant, the repair becomes more and more complicated. The photos posted of the HV battery service, speak for themselves:

But the clear winner was the corroded HV battery cell casing:

  • Can the coronavirus kill a Fiat 500e?

Can the coronavirus kill a Fiat 500e?

Can the coronavirus kill a Fiat 500e? The answer is No and Yes same time. CoVID-19 freezes life of many people all around the world. Lot of them was even not able to get the place where they left cars.
Unfortunately Fiat 500e don’t like to be not used. Combined with a low quality 12 volt battery, that needs to be recharged from a high voltage battery can cause the battery computer to hang and over discharge the HV batteries below safe minimal voltage.

47% Battery, not ready”, not charging Fiat 500e? It does not have to result in the Fiat 500e death.

Our last patient became a victim of CoVID-19. However, thanks to the very quick response of its owner, the problem was solved with microscopic loss of the state of health to the HV battery.

    Test drive and engine power

Below is a test drive video showing the engine power indicator. The six-year-old Fiat 500e after overdischarged HV battery rised by us shows the maximum factory performance of the engine, and thus the battery! I am really very happy with this result. It proves that the method and equipment I use do not degrade the battery during the process. This is not achievable with standard lithium battery chargers that is used by other services!

Of course I was able to get this result thanks to the fact that the battery was in very good condition before the problem begin. It is impossible to improve the state of lithium-ion cells, but it can definitely be worsened by incorrectly carrying out this operation.

As I have mentioned many times, the most important thing about this problem is time. The sooner the car gets to our Electric Vehicle Battery Service or we to the car, the lower the risk of damage to the Fiat’s 500e HV battery.

Just today, more than a year after the repair, I got an e-mail. Let me publish the first words of the blue 500e owner, to which i don’t need to add anything 🙂

Can the coronavirus kill a Fiat 500e?

Right!, if the car is left in this condition for a long period of time

No, if the car goes quickly to the appropriate Fiat 500e service center or Electric Vehicles Service Center

Definitely Not, if you trust me to fix this problem.

  • Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation

    Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation

Fiat 500e Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation. What is it and what is it for. In every electric car, the High Voltage (HV) installation is fully insulated from the 12V installation. The frame of an electric car is not a mass or a downside High Voltage (HV) installations, as it almost always happens with internal combustion cars and 12V installations.

Fiat 500e Loss of Insulation (LOI) occurs when there is a violation of the separation between the high voltage system and the low voltage system of the vehicle.
In the Fiat 500e, the high-voltage system is isolated from the 12-V system. The resistance between these points is calculated based on the energy potential of high-voltage systems (battery pack voltage). The higher the voltage potential, the higher the resistance (insulation) value.

Fiat 500e Loss of Insulation can be associated with one of the following high voltage installation modules:

    Electric heater (AEH)
    Power Inverter Module (PIM)
    On-board charging module (OBCM)
    Electric drive motor (EDM)
    High voltage battery system (HVBS)
    Electric air compressor (EAC)
    Battery coolant heater (BCH)
High voltage energy distribution center (high voltage PDC)

Fiat 500e body insulation test, Insane equal to ZERO Ohms.

The described patient came to our Electric Cars Service on a tow truck from outside the province. Unfortunately, before falling into the hands of some amateur, because of the cost of tow trucks and the desire to save. Fortunately, it didn’t end in a serious accident. Fiat 500e diagnostic tools are not only to delete DTC’s and Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation Fault is the best example. Bpcm HV battery insulation test results:

Fiat 500e body insulation test equal to ZERO Ohms.
    Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation
    Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation

2013 Fiat 500e body insulation test equal to ZERO Ohms means a high voltage short circuit with the car frame. Measurements made with the voltmeter confirm the diagnosis from the computer. Over 200V between the ‘+’ HV installation and the car frame. Fortunately, the car’s safety systems worked, causing it to become immobilized. Otherwise, if it were enough to clear the errors and start the car, driving it would be like groping in cables protruding from the wall or in a home fuse box.

Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation. Bloody short circuit in high voltage installation

Diagnosing a short circuit in a high-voltage (HV) Fiat 500e installation begins with a visual inspection of the entire car. The initial look shows the rich service history of the Fiat 500e and what you can see at first glance, unfortunately LITTLE PROFESSIONAL !!!

    [swpm_protected for=”2″]

despite the lack of visible obvious cause of the problem, the list of potential is growing every day.

    Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation
Fiat 500e on-board chargers for testing.

The real hits start when the HV system modules are dismantled, which we always start with draining the coolant. Tanks at the top full of pink, blue fluid (typical colour after mixing with a typical Polish fluid) from the unscrewed tap under the radiator does not even drop a drop … Attempts to start the water pump despite checked fuses and forced command from the service computer do not bring the desired result …

The water pump is only started for the first time after the installation of the ‘new’ Fiat 500e on-board charger (OBCM). Unfortunately, this substitution has no effect when it comes to puncturing high voltage installations. Could another hard-boiled module be an inverter (PIM)

An additional small body test using a micrometer explains a lot about the car’s history and potential causes of the problem. In addition, it suggests one more potential cause of the problem of Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation

repainted the whole side and the post … and it was probably welded …

we check every cable, every element of the system. The amount of things that raise our concerns is bursting at the seams.

Solving not ready no faults codes Fiat 500e

Solving not ready no faults codes Fiat 500e. Last Friday evening got a call from Alexey from drive2.ru forum with Fiat 500e problem that was left for few weeks not used. 2015 Fiat 500e without U69 recall update, with dead 12V battery, not ready and not charging = over-discharged HV Battery. But where is the red turtle. With over discharged HV battery we should have at least “BPCM Fault” diagnostics trouble code on OBCM and PIM. In this case Alexey’s AlfaOBD running on ELM327 wifi shows no active faults/trouble codes.

First fast look at HV battery data shows not a HV Battery based problem. So after i have asked Alexey to perform 12V Power Down Procedure for half an hour to reset Fiat 500e i check logs from EVCU, OBCM and one more time back to Battery Pack Control Module log. Despite my almost 100% certainty, the “30minutes, 12V power off procedure” didn’t solve the problem. The situation is getting stranger every moment.

A closer look at battery data shows one stored problem that currently run & passed this cycle. It was car & battery Loss Of Isolation problem. We have reset isolation check fault with no resolutes again.

It takes me about two or three more hours to solve the problem. Which is quite bad time for this kind of problem. But on the other hand i have only AlfaOBD logs without remotely access to Fiat 500e with WiTech diagnostics program that i’m get used too.
