    Another Fiat 500e after another service. I.e. repair of a car, broken by another service. The car came to me after a remote diagnosis of the loss of insulators. I was expecting some possible problems and solutions. But the actual problem that arose was absolutely not expected. Even though I have had similar cases before, this one brought me some additional puzzles. But at the end it turned out that the service that repaired the batteries before me, was the most fault of this car.

    Can the coronavirus kill a Fiat 500e? The answer is No and Yes same time. CoVID-19 freezes life of many people all around the world. Lot of them was even not able to get the place where they left cars.
    Unfortunately Fiat 500e don’t like to be not used. Combined with a low quality 12 volt battery, that needs to be recharged from a high voltage battery can cause the battery computer to hang and over discharge the HV batteries below safe minimal voltage.

    Below is a test drive video showing the engine power indicator. The six-year-old Fiat 500e after overdischarged HV battery rised by us shows the maximum factory performance of the engine, and thus the battery! I am really very happy with this result. It proves that the method and equipment I use do not degrade the battery during the process. This is not achievable with standard lithium battery chargers that is used by other services!

    Of course I was able to get this result thanks to the fact that the battery was in very good condition before the problem begin. It is impossible to improve the state of lithium-ion cells, but it can definitely be worsened by incorrectly carrying out this operation.

    As I have mentioned many times, the most important thing about this problem is time. The sooner the car gets to our Electric Vehicle Battery Service or we to the car, the lower the risk of damage to the Fiat’s 500e HV battery.



    Just today, more than a year after the repair, I got an e-mail. Let me publish the first words of the blue 500e owner, to which i don’t need to add anything 🙂

    Fiat 500e Fiat 500e Loss Of Insulation. What is it and what is it for. In every electric car, the High Voltage (HV) installation is fully insulated from the 12V installation. The frame of an electric car is not a mass or a downside High Voltage (HV) installations, as it almost always happens with internal combustion cars and 12V installations.

    Fiat 500e Loss of Insulation (LOI) occurs when there is a violation of the separation between the high voltage system and the low voltage system of the vehicle.
    In the Fiat 500e, the high-voltage system is isolated from the 12-V system. The resistance between these points is calculated based on the energy potential of high-voltage systems (battery pack voltage). The higher the voltage potential, the higher the resistance (insulation) value.

    Fiat 500e Loss of Insulation can be associated with one of the following high voltage installation modules:

    Electric heater (AEH)
    Power Inverter Module (PIM)

    The real hits start when the HV system modules are dismantled, which we always start with draining the coolant. Tanks at the top full of pink, blue fluid (typical colour after mixing with a typical Polish fluid) from the unscrewed tap under the radiator does not even drop a drop … Attempts to start the water pump despite checked fuses and forced command from the service computer do not bring the desired result …

    The water pump is only started for the first time after the installation of the ‘new’ Fiat 500e on-board charger (OBCM). Unfortunately, this substitution has no effect when it comes to puncturing high voltage installations. Could another hard-boiled module be an inverter (PIM)

    The fiat 500e not-charging problem, is an overly discharged high-voltage battery. This means the battery pack is below the operating level. With this problem, time is of the essence. The sooner we wake up the HV battery, the better. If the HV battery remains below 2,8V per cell for more than a few months, it will cause irreparable damage.

    The first reason may seem ridiculous. But has already beaten not only one specialist 😉
    You have active charge schedule. Fiat 500e charge schedule is very useful if you have a night rate for kWh.

    1. Connect charger
    2. Press Enter on Instrument Panel Cluster for “charge now”
    3. After Key ON disable charge schedule in IPC Menu.

    If Car is fresh pick up from port:

    1. Requires unlocking after a collision
    2. Over discharged HV Battery

    Flashing right turn light after turning the ignition means a blocked car after a collision. requires checking and unlocking after an accident.

    If Car stay unattended for >= 3 weeks

    1. Check 12V Battery condition
    2. Over discharged HV Battery

    The manufacturer of the Fiat 500e recommends that even in the case of a 2-week vacation, leave the car with the Level I or Level II charger connected.
    I don’t like this solution. In my idea better is to remove the HV Fuse if you need to live the car unattended for more then a week.

    Check charging cable or just call us as fast as possible.
