    Remote repair with ATS Racing. Last week I was contacted by Aaron from ATS Racing with Fiat 500e problem. The guys from ATS Racing specialize in High Power modifications of the Toyota engines.

    Some time ago Aaron bought a broken Fiat 500e. According to the seller, the car stopped charging one day. Unfortunately, he did not admit that someone clumsily tried to fix this car.

    During the first remote connection, it turned out that we have no connection with almost any module of the CAN network responsible for the drivetrain. Previously, Aaron tried to replace the EVCU but this did not help to regain communication. That’s why he wanted to send me both EVCU and BPCM for verification. I found it unnecessary and too expensive. Thanks to my little hint, Aaron was able to locate the damaged module the very next day after our first connection.

    New Fiat 500e 2020 – the first globally available electric Fiat 500e. Available in three body styles: hatchback, cabrio and in a completely new three-door variant 3+1. The 3+1 version has a double-wing passenger door, which makes it easier to get to the rear seat. additionally, two versions of the engine and battery are available: 95KM and 24kWh or a more powerful version with a 118KM engine and a battery with a capacity of 42kWh. The latter, according to the manufacturer, provides 321km of range.

    As I have mentioned more than once, with the ideas for lowering the Fiat 500e suspension, even a slight damage to the HV battery housing can have very serious consequences.

    Even if the lower battery casing only has a slight dent when the car’s chassis hits a high curb, the upper plastic casing can be significantly damaged. Read more about Fiat 500e suspension modifications

    This is what it looked like this time, a significant damage to the upper housing, not visible without unscrewing the car’s chassis aerodynamic covers, resulted in the battery being slowly but gradually filled with water.

    At the beginning, when the battery was only damp inside, the car certainly started to burst with errors. Errors – yellow triangle, of course, instead of diagnosing the error and looking for it, someone “fixed” the problem by disconnecting the 12V batteries for a moment, as everyone on the Fiat 500e forums advises.
    Therefore, I repeat once again it is not gasoline, which is flawed when pouring low-quality fuel, it is an electric car that is not so stupid and in most cases it does not show errors without a Reason.

    There are nothing more stupid than clearing errors by disconnecting 12v and not checking the reason. what’s following this, the most stupid are questions and answers in the fiat forums:

    – “hi in the morning i get a yellow triangle in my fiat 500e what to do”

    – “disconnect the 12v battery and wait a moment, plug it back in and it’s fixed”

    – “WOW THANKS, EVERYTHING WORKS, THANKS TO YOU, I SAVED 100 or 200 euro for computer diagnostics.”

    After a few months, the battery disconnect trick stops working, and that’s when you start thinking. and when a few months / years later the car comes to me.     Another Fiat 500e after another service. I.e. repair of a car, broken by another service. The car came to me after a remote diagnosis of the loss of insulators. I was expecting some possible problems and solutions. But the actual problem that arose was absolutely not expected. Even though I have had similar cases before, this one brought me some additional puzzles. But at the end it turned out that the service that repaired the batteries before me, was the most fault of this car.

Because the earlier the problem is diagnosed, the smaller the damage to the battery and the repair is much easier. the longer the battery is exposed to water and coolant, the repair becomes more and more complicated.     Fiat 500e, cabin heater & AC problem after problem. I’m not going to go into detail about what happened before the car came to me. I wish to mention only, that the car had a new cabin heater and Fiat 500e HV fuses in the PDC were replaced. Both heating and air conditioning were not working in the car. In addition, computer diagnostics showed errors in the CAN network and a short to ground in the air conditioning compressor.

    • Fiat does not sell spare parts for HV batteries. Therefore all spare parts you have to find from the aftermarket.
    • Most Fiats 500e are not badly shattered after the accidents. Making almost every one repairable without major problems. This makes the used Fiat 500e HV batteries extremely hard to find or get.

    Several times I had an offer to buy a used Fiat 500e battery with the body (rest of the car) for free 😉

    therefore better always try to repair the Fiat 500e HV battery then think about Fiat 500e battery replacement. Sometimes it may take several months to find a Fiat 500e HV battery for sale. the only thing I can give you a hint is to browse through the ads from auction sites.

    Fiat 500e battery life calculation by a producer, according to Fiat 500e maintenance schedule is 15 years or 240 000 km. In line with these assumptions, the first Fiats 500e from 2013, exceeded the halfway point of life. I drove many examples from 2013 and some of them show a slight degradation of the battery. Some examples of this model have exceeded my wildest expectations and after 7 years of use they show SOH of the battery between 99 and 100%.

    Fiat 500e suspension modifications are a more and more frequent topic that I encounter on internet forums and customer questions. A recurring idea is to increase the diameter of the rims and lower the suspension.

    Why do I consider this a bad idea?

    First of all, because the Fiat 500e drives really, really well even on track conditions. The opinions of RallyCross riders are surprisingly good. As evidenced by their results even with other modified cars. so why change something that works well?
    The main reason turns out to be the visual aspects. Too much distance between the wheels and the wheel arches.

    maybe the distance between the wheels and the wheel arches is too great. But the distance between the high voltage battery and the ground is not so long.

    I see a damaged battery pack very often. From damaged high-voltage sockets to dents and holes in the battery case itself. Replacing the battery socket is a job for most of the day. Requires the removal of the entire high voltage battery and thus the dismantling of the entire rear suspension. It is not easy to get spare parts because FCA treats the HV batterie as one unit and does not sell spare parts for it.

    A damaged battery case is a much bigger problem. If the pack becomes unsealed, it can seriously damage the battery. I have already encountered case of damage to the battery’s computer module – BPCM, after leaving a curb that is too high. The impact was so strong that the screw holding the BPCM made a hole in the top cover of the battery.

    Even more serious problems can cause seemingly minor damages – holes, through which water can seeps into the battery casing. Such a problem, not noticed in time, can cause very extensive damage. Transferring the entire battery to a new housing is a task for the whole day for 2 people

    Therefore, the most recommended by me, Fiat 500e suspension modifications is the purchase of new, very good tires 😉
