    Solving not ready no faults codes Fiat 500e. Last Friday evening got a call from Alexey from drive2.ru forum with Fiat 500e problem that was left for few weeks not used. 2015 Fiat 500e without U69 recall update, with dead 12V battery, not ready and not charging = over-discharged HV Battery. But where is the red turtle. With over discharged HV battery we should have at least “BPCM Fault” diagnostics trouble code on OBCM and PIM. In this case Alexey’s AlfaOBD running on ELM327 wifi shows no active faults/trouble codes.

    First fast look at HV battery data shows not a HV Battery based problem. So after i have asked Alexey to perform 12V Power Down Procedure for half an hour to reset Fiat 500e i check logs from EVCU, OBCM and one more time back to Battery Pack Control Module log. Despite my almost 100% certainty, the “30minutes, 12V power off procedure” didn’t solve the problem. The situation is getting stranger every moment.

    A closer look at battery data shows one stored problem that currently run & passed this cycle. It was car & battery Loss Of Isolation problem. We have reset isolation check fault with no resolutes again.

    It takes me about two or three more hours to solve the problem. Which is quite bad time for this kind of problem. But on the other hand i have only AlfaOBD logs without remotely access to Fiat 500e with WiTech diagnostics program that i’m get used too.

    During any service works on Fiat 500e, remember to remove safety plug !!

    Good-size lithium-ion batteries: Pacifice is sufficient for about 60km range in full electric mode. Unlike Toyota equipped with ridiculously small NiMHs known from ‘historic’ Nokia, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid can be called an electric car. 60km is a distance that most Polish drivers do not travel even in two days, commuting only to work. Charging from 220V takes no more than 2-3 hours. Thanks to that, covering greater distances per day, we are able to connect and charge the car fully, even during dinner or shopping at the supermarket.

    Why is Toyota Hybrid fake?

    Because driving a few or several hundred meters on a Toyota electric motor is possible only in the parking lot, or pulling a string of pissed off drivers. Each little bit more powerful brush of the accelerator pedal immediately ignites the internal combustion engine. Which means that the Toyota Hybrid turns out to be only a VERY expensive car equipped with START-STOP functions. Equipping the car with NiMH batteries costing over PLN 1 thousand, which is not able to pull heating or air conditioning when stopping at traffic lights. And the whole so much publicized hybrid drive, in fact, turns out to be an internal combustion engine equipped with a large and heavy electric generator, mainly used to recover energy from braking and as a starter for an internal combustion engine.

    Therefore, the fact that the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid starts the engine when the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights can be considered a defect.

    We can count it as a defect, which we would expect, to see as a DTC (Diagnostics Trouble Codes) error after connecting the computer. An interesting fact was that the car had only a few small, recorded errors. Among the few active, the most serious seemed to be a warning of low tire pressure. Although for a moment, I already suspected Chrysler about the system of filling, punctured wheels, which certainly would require firing the compressor powered on the belt from the engine shaft, but I decided to look under the hood of the Pacific.

    *) Why, I am convinced that PlugIn is the only hybrid that makes sense? For what, keep two propulsion systems since one basically does not serve. The hybrid is a very complicated propulsion system, plus all the costs of operating an internal combustion engine.

    Toyota hybrid is on average 20,000 more expensive than its combustion equivalent. He slept on average 5 liters per hundred with a delicate leg. Assuming a daily distance of 100 km per year, we spend PLN 7,000 on fuel, another PLN 1,500 for periodic review of internal combustion engines: oil, filters, V-belts replacement for older cars, service costs increase significantly: candles, timing, lambda courts, clutches, bearings, gearboxes … only everything much more difficult to access because it is equipped with separate cooling and control systems, hundreds of cables and sensors. After a few years, when you finally think that Hybrid has returned, the “Check Hybrid System” light comes on. After visiting the site, you find out that you need to replace the batteries for PLN 14,000.

    How does it look compared to the Fiat 500e?

    For comparison: the annual cost of charging a Fiat 500e with a daily mileage from 100km to 140km is PLN 1,400 per year. Apart from the suspension system, which in the case of Toyota I did not count, it is the total annual cost of maintaining an electric car such as the Fiat 500e. You will tell me how the battery will fall after 4 years. Well, you can’t compare a NiMH micro from a 100V Toyota hybrid, covered with a carpet in the trunk to over 10 times larger almost 400V HV Battery – consisting of almost 100 Lithium-Ion cells with full cell temperature control. That is, from cooling through a heat exchanger with air conditioning to heating in winter. Thanks to the large power reserve in the Fiat 500e HV battery, this package is not overloaded like a “poor” NiMH from Toyota, which is loaded with huge currents at each start to help, a small and of course exhausted combustion unit. Whether during braking, when there is a huge amount of energy to be taken from the engine, unfortunately in a short time. All this, in turn, increases the temperature of the battery and this consequently causes accelerated wear.

Therefore, the solution suggested by forum users from fiat500us.com, i.e. disconnecting the battery, only causes the car to be reset, the MIL is temporarily turned off but does not solve the problem. meanwhile, the problem can only grow and wreak more havoc.

    I have already repaired a car in which the owners “had to disconnect” the 12V batteries from time to time for a year.

    My Opinion about Chrysler Pacifica Plugin Hybrid is very good. I fell in love with this car on my first ride. the biggest advantage of this hybrid is PlugIn. In other words,  the high voltage batteries is charging while driving from an internal combustion engine and from a household socket.

    I was impressed after test drive with this car in my Electric Vehicles Service. A very pleasant acceleration. Probably as in the entire series of Chrysler minivans, a soft suspension that swallows every hole.

The only role of the customer, is to remove the plug from the suitcase and connect to the Fiat 500e OBD socket. The device would automatically connect to our technician’s computer.     I have started my adventure with lithium batteries about 20 years ago, as a RC modeler. Lithium batteries that we used in flying models, unlike laptop batteries, were designed for maximum current, delivered in a very short time. Thanks to this I gained experience with the most well-fed Lithium batteries in the world. Batteries that I use for acrobatic or racing models are able to temporarily spend up to 100 times more current than the nominal capacity.
    What does it mean? For example, use a small battery used in 250 class acrobatic drones with a capacity of 1300mAh on 14.8V what means 4 cells per 3.7V nominal.

    Next to the capacity, a thick 75C inscription appears, marked with a black background. This means that, we can temporarily pull the current ,75 times larger than its capacity.
    That is 75 * 1300mA = 97 500 mA.
    Almost 98Amps on 15V what gives 1470W from a battery not much bigger than a matchbox.

    No Lithium battery archive ‘capacity memory effect’ therefore it is not necessary to always discharge to zero and charge to 100%. and it will definitely be better if we don’t charge like that. If you do not use 100% daily, consider setting a charging schedule so as not to recharge the battery every day to 100%. For Lithium Battery bests practices try to keep the limits from 20 to 80% State-of-Charge. You don’t have to worry about the battery being unbalanced. Discharging to zero and charging to 100% has nothing to do with balancing the battery. Fiat 500e balances the HV package whenever it is needed, even during sleep cycle

    Lithium batteries storage

    Lithium batteries differ from each other, the additives used, which every manufacturer keeps secret… Lithum Polimer batteries, achieve their incredible performance at the expense of stability and explosive nature. These batteries, whose purpose is to discharge from 100% to zero in 3-4 minutes are extremely sensitive to too low charge or high charge. The only way to store these batteries, as well as all other Lithium batteries, is to charge them to the “magic” STORAGE level of 3.75V – 3.82V per cell (about 50%SOC)

    Proper prepared to store Lithium batteries can be stored up to 5 years, almost without degrading the battery SOH (State-of-Health) Remember, or notice the next time, how much charge your new mobile phone has taken straight out of the box?

    For any Lithium Battery bests practices, remember, no lithium batteries like to be 0% or 100% too long. And the closer to the center (SOC: 45-50%) the better. Depending on the additives used for the chemical composition and battery pack build. Lithium batteries can only be more or less resistant to too high or too low SOC.

    Putting battery in to Storage State requires a special charging mode. it is mainly used for batteries used from time to time such as drones/RC batteris, which we charge to 4.2V / cell just before use.

    This dead Fiat 500e did not go into standby and did not want to charge. When we connect diagnostic computer, the first eye-throwing errors indicate overheating of the high-voltage package. After a quick check of the HV battery cooling installation, we proceeded to further analyse the actual data. Temperature readings from the individual target packets ranged from 21 to 85! Centigrade. Such readings clearly indicate damage to the balancer modules or the sensors themselves. As a result we got the decision, we lift the electric car up and take out the HV batteries. 



    After opening the Fiat 500e Traction battery pack, our surprise was endless. The whole top cover was sweat with liquefed water. All steel rusty bolts, a large part of the package floor covered with strange dust. We couldn’t understand where the water could take on 2 the battery.

    It turned out that the non-damaged HV battery housing has a small abrasion on the front. Rubbing small but strong enough that resulted in a miniature tear of the sheet metal package. Finaly We found thats place, where the water gets into the HV battery pack. At the same time the tear was small enough that it was not able to evaporate the pressed water.

    Drying, cleaning, measuring, brewing and again measuring took a dozen hours of really hard work. A work that you can certainly avoid by reporting to us for a review before or after purchasing an electric fiat. As the above case shows, easy to repair, a slight malfunction can result in very large and often not even reversible damage to the components of the electric car.

The sooner we wake up the HV battery, the better. If the HV battery remains below 2,8V per cell for more than a few months, it will cause irreparable damage.

    The first reason may seem ridiculous. But has already beaten not only one specialist 😉
    You have active charge schedule. Fiat 500e charge schedule is very useful if you have a night rate for kWh.

    1. Connect charger
    2. Press Enter on Instrument Panel Cluster for “charge now”
    3. After Key ON disable charge schedule in IPC Menu.

    If Car is fresh pick up from port:

    1. Requires unlocking after a collision
    2. Over discharged HV Battery

    Flashing right turn light after turning the ignition means a blocked car after a collision. requires checking and unlocking after an accident.

    If Car stay unattended for >= 3 weeks

    1. Check 12V Battery condition
    2. Over discharged HV Battery

    The manufacturer of the Fiat 500e recommends that even in the case of a 2-week vacation, leave the car with the Level I or Level II charger connected.
    I don’t like this solution. In my idea better is to remove the HV Fuse if you need to live the car unattended for more then a week.

    Check charging cable or just call us as fast as possible.
