    Remote repair with ATS Racing. Last week I was contacted by Aaron from ATS Racing with Fiat 500e problem. The guys from ATS Racing specialize in High Power modifications of the Toyota engines.

    Some time ago Aaron bought a broken Fiat 500e. According to the seller, the car stopped charging one day. Unfortunately, he did not admit that someone clumsily tried to fix this car.

    During the first remote connection, it turned out that we have no connection with almost any module of the CAN network responsible for the drivetrain. Previously, Aaron tried to replace the EVCU but this did not help to regain communication. That’s why he wanted to send me both EVCU and BPCM for verification. I found it unnecessary and too expensive. Thanks to my little hint, Aaron was able to locate the damaged module the very next day after our first connection.

    As I have mentioned more than once, with the ideas for lowering the Fiat 500e suspension, even a slight damage to the HV battery housing can have very serious consequences.

    This is what it looked like this time, a significant damage to the upper housing, not visible without unscrewing the car’s chassis aerodynamic covers, resulted in the battery being slowly but gradually filled with water.

    At the beginning, when the battery was only damp inside, the car certainly started to burst with errors. Errors – yellow triangle, of course, instead of diagnosing the error and looking for it, someone “fixed” the problem by disconnecting the 12V batteries for a moment, as everyone on the Fiat 500e forums advises.
    Therefore, I repeat once again it is not gasoline, which is flawed when pouring low-quality fuel, it is an electric car that is not so stupid and in most cases it does not show errors without a Reason.

    There are nothing more stupid than clearing errors by disconnecting 12v and not checking the reason. what’s following this, the most stupid are questions and answers in the fiat forums:

    – “hi in the morning i get a yellow triangle in my fiat 500e what to do”

    – “disconnect the 12v battery and wait a moment, plug it back in and it’s fixed”

    – “WOW THANKS, EVERYTHING WORKS, THANKS TO YOU, I SAVED 100 or 200 euro for computer diagnostics.”

    After a few months, the battery disconnect trick stops working, and that’s when you start thinking. and when a few months / years later the car comes to me.     Unfortunately Fiat 500e don’t like to be not used. Combined with a low quality 12 volt battery, that needs to be recharged from a high voltage battery can cause the battery computer to hang and over discharge the HV batteries below safe minimal voltage.

    Test drive and engine power

    Below is a test drive video showing the engine power indicator. The six-year-old Fiat 500e after overdischarged HV battery rised by us shows the maximum factory performance of the engine, and thus the battery! I am really very happy with this result. It proves that the method and equipment I use do not degrade the battery during the process. This is not achievable with standard lithium battery chargers that is used by other services!

    Of course I was able to get this result thanks to the fact that the battery was in very good condition before the problem begin. It is impossible to improve the state of lithium-ion cells, but it can definitely be worsened by incorrectly carrying out this operation.

    As I have mentioned many times, the most important thing about this problem is time. The sooner the car gets to our Electric Vehicle Battery Service or we to the car, the lower the risk of damage to the Fiat’s 500e HV battery.



    Just today, more than a year after the repair, I got an e-mail. Let me publish the first words of the blue 500e owner, to which i don’t need to add anything 🙂

    Fiat 500e, cabin heater & AC problem after problem. I’m not going to go into detail about what happened before the car came to me. I wish to mention only, that the car had a new cabin heater and Fiat 500e HV fuses in the PDC were replaced. Both heating and air conditioning were not working in the car.     • Most Fiats 500e are not badly shattered after the accidents. Making almost every one repairable without major problems. This makes the used Fiat 500e HV batteries extremely hard to find or get.

    Several times I had an offer to buy a used Fiat 500e battery with the body (rest of the car) for free 😉

    therefore better always try to repair the Fiat 500e HV battery then think about Fiat 500e battery replacement. Sometimes it may take several months to find a Fiat 500e HV battery for sale. the only thing I can give you a hint is to browse through the ads from auction sites.

    Fiat 500e battery life calculation by a producer, according to Fiat 500e maintenance schedule is 15 years or 240 000 km. In line with these assumptions, the first Fiats 500e from 2013, exceeded the halfway point of life. I drove many examples from 2013 and some of them show a slight degradation of the battery. Some examples of this model have exceeded my wildest expectations and after 7 years of use they show SOH of the battery between 99 and 100%.

    Fiat 500e suspension modifications are a more and more frequent topic that I encounter on internet forums and customer questions. A recurring idea is to increase the diameter of the rims and lower the suspension.

    Why do I consider this a bad idea?

    First of all, because the Fiat 500e drives really, really well even on track conditions. The opinions of RallyCross riders are surprisingly good. As evidenced by their results even with other modified cars. so why change something that works well?
    The main reason turns out to be the visual aspects. Too much distance between the wheels and the wheel arches.

    maybe the distance between the wheels and the wheel arches is too great. But the distance between the high voltage battery and the ground is not so long.

    I see a damaged battery pack very often. From damaged high-voltage sockets to dents and holes in the battery case itself. Replacing the battery socket is a job for most of the day. Requires the removal of the entire high voltage battery and thus the dismantling of the entire rear suspension. It is not easy to get spare parts because FCA treats the HV batterie as one unit and does not sell spare parts for it.

    A damaged battery case is a much bigger problem. If the pack becomes unsealed, it can seriously damage the battery. I have already encountered case of damage to the battery’s computer module – BPCM, after leaving a curb that is too high. The impact was so strong that the screw holding the BPCM made a hole in the top cover of the battery.

    Even more serious problems can cause seemingly minor damages – holes, through which water can seeps into the battery casing. Such a problem, not noticed in time, can cause very extensive damage. Transferring the entire battery to a new housing is a task for the whole day for 2 people

    Therefore, the most recommended by me, Fiat 500e suspension modifications is the purchase of new, very good tires 😉

    Fiat 500e remote diagnosis with Dunew Motor Sport Bulgaria. It’s already my third electric Fiat 500e that I am helping to get started in Bulgaria. And I think the first such professional team with which I worked remotely from the beginning of COVID lockdown.



    Over the last few months, several workshops have called me asking for help in the diagnostics of the Fiat 500e. To my great surprise, the same scenario was repeated every time. After a few minutes of conversation, it turned out that they really don’t have any knowledge of electric cars. Some of them might have repaired some electric scooters or Melexes before, but certainly nothing more complicated.

    This time the differences could be heard after a few moments of conversation with Rumen – the boss of Dunew Motor Sport. In these few moments, we have already diagnosed the Fiat 500e HV battery & drivetrain with the BOSCH KTS. After the first conclusions and listing possible diagnostic tools, Rumen had one of them in place and another dedicated to Fiat, he ordered for the next day. Thanks to this, the next day we had all the updates of Fiat modules done.



    An accident caused the purchased new tool to have a manufacturing defect. The defect would be very difficult to diagnose remotely without seeing the device. Although Rumen was working with this tool for the first time, he immediately noticed some minor irregularities in the operation of the device. Thanks to this, when problems with the device began, he was able to detect whether it was working well or not.

    It turned out that our intervention was needed immediately to diagnose issues on the first two cars. Received three weeks ago, the HV batteries turned out to be completely dead. They had newly regenerated HV Battery packages from a competing company. The first had the symptom of damage as, of course, not switching on. Then showing 0% to 47% State of Charge on IPC indicating an overly discharged state.

    Lifting and opening the HV housing revealed the problem. It turned out that the HV battery had broken cells. They were self-discharging. This condition should never leave a company that has undertaken the remanufacturing.

    Despite our efforts to build one battery out of two, it was not possible to collect enough modules in good condition. Unfortunately, this reconstruction will require additional cells from a third HV packet, as well as re-checking all battery capacity measurements. Again, this is unacceptable with newly reconditioned units.

    The second car had a problem with lost body settings. After successful re-programming, it turned out that the programmed ignition key had also been lost. These related problems were both quickly resolved.

    Fiat 500e Remote Service in the United States, begins with one of the biggest messes I have ever encountered. Jon sent me a n e-mail with dashboard photos of almost all possible errors appearing simultaneously on his 2013 500e. His main concern however, was repair for “Not Ready,” perhaps the most dreaded error of all. John admitted that he had already searched all sites and forums of 500e owners. He had tried a great many ‘fixes’ with no results for any of the errors.

    Initial problem list, posted by John was:

    • “Not Ready” immobile vehicle – with flashing odometer
    • “Blue and Me,” steering wheel buttons, and USB not working
    • AlfaOBD Body Computer error B2204
    • AlfaOBD errors TMPS U0019 and C1001-4
    • There is a postal letter envelope icon above odometer -origin unknown.
    • Level 1 EVSE not charge, with two outside dashboard lights flashing.

    Jon had OBDLink MX+ code reader and registered copy Android AlfaOBD, so I immediately asked him to send me the HV Battery Log. This’s the basis for servicing an electric car

    Alfa’s OBD Battery Log reported few issues, except for the lack of the correct signal to switch the contactors and the lack of charging for the 12 V battery. This is a list of common problem for people who press “everything” in AlfaOBD. But for further diagnostics, I needed logs from other powertrain ECUs.
    Unfortunately, Jon had issues that prevented getting additional logs. The situation was getting weirder. Using one trick, I was able to resolve the “Not Ready,” and get the Fiat 500e up and running. But not everything was working properly. Even though the car was already in the “Ready” state, the 12V battery was still not being charged.

    Most troubling now was the number of errors in CAN communications, in addition to low 12V battery charge, ABS/RBC failure, and ECU configuration mismatch.

    With no possibility to generate logs from several ECUs, I decided to put AlfaOBD on the shelf, and switch to the native 500e diagnostic tool: WiTech. It enables immediate connections to all modules in both CAN networks, giving a better and more reliable overview.

    This dead Fiat 500e did not go into standby and did not want to charge. When we connect diagnostic computer, the first eye-throwing errors indicate overheating of the high-voltage package. After a quick check of the HV battery cooling installation, we proceeded to further analyse the actual data. Temperature readings from the individual target packets ranged from 21 to 85! Centigrade. Such readings clearly indicate damage to the balancer modules or the sensors themselves. As a result we got the decision, we lift the electric car up and take out the HV batteries. 



    After opening the Fiat 500e Traction battery pack, our surprise was endless. The whole top cover was sweat with liquefed water. All steel rusty bolts, a large part of the package floor covered with strange dust. We couldn’t understand where the water could take on 2 the battery.

    It turned out that the non-damaged HV battery housing has a small abrasion on the front. Rubbing small but strong enough that resulted in a miniature tear of the sheet metal package. Finaly We found thats place, where the water gets into the HV battery pack. At the same time the tear was small enough that it was not able to evaporate the pressed water.

    Drying, cleaning, measuring, brewing and again measuring took a dozen hours of really hard work. A work that you can certainly avoid by reporting to us for a review before or after purchasing an electric fiat. As the above case shows, easy to repair, a slight malfunction can result in very large and often not even reversible damage to the components of the electric car.
